Sunflower Natural Food in Fair Oaks

Sunflower Natural Food Restaurant is like a hidden little food gem in the Sacramento region.  Tucked away by the Village Park in Fair Oaks, it offers vegan and vegetarian options for lunch and dinner.  I used to work about 10 minutes drive from the place and it used to be my frequent lunch destination.  I wanted to write a review of this place for a while, because there is hardly any other place in Sacramento area that will satisfy a plant based burger craving like Sunflower.

The restaurant itself is just a  little 'drive thru' building with order and pick up windows.  There are about 4-6 benches and 3 tables to eat at.  Parking is very limited, so eating in a car in the parking lot is not recommended.  The restaurant is located right on the corner of two crossing streets with stop signs, and I remember some days having a hard time getting to the parking lot and finding a parking during lunch hour in warm, sunny weather.

The food is hearty and satisfying.  Last time I went there I ordered what seems to be their most popular feature, the Nut Burger, and the Falafel Burger.  Both were delicious, loaded with sprouts and lettuce, tomato and their house sauce.   I'm always happy to get a good dose of greens, on top of the meaty burger.  The portions are pretty big and will leave you deliciously satisfied.  For the gluten intolerant, they do offer gluten free bread and dessert options.

The menu includes few versions of the traditional burger, few sandwich options, salad (although the last time I check, the potato salad is a seasonal option not available in winter).  It also offers drinks, freshly squeezed juices and delicious vegan desserts.

One of the unique attractions of this place are the hens and roosters that honor the parking lot with their presence.  The nearby Village Park,  incidentally a lovely place to park your car, eat your lunch and enjoy the clucking of hens, is literally only few steps away.  The roosters parade themselves like they own the place (and they really do) and chase their hens around.  It's a good place for those who want to get away from city noise and would appreciate little more country feeling; just close your eyes and the crowing of the roosters will take you to a country homestead far far away.

One thing you should keep in mind is that Sunflower Natural Food Restaurant tends to be very popular, and busy especially during warm months.  Of course, if you provide good food people will flock.  But this often creates a longer waiting time for you food during lunch time.  There were few times when I had to wait about 15-20 minutes for my food.  If you're on a 30 minutes lunch break, well, this provides a bit of a problem, since they do not accept orders over the phone.

Overall it's a fantastic place to stop by and grab a bite.  I do it quite often, never once had anything to complain about, and always left more than happy.  The restaurant offers delicious comfort food, and the prices are pretty affordable.  The location, although small, is very lovely and the place has a certain kind of charm about it that will make you want to go back there again and again.
