How To Prevent & Survive Holiday Theft

Holiday theft is a serious problem.

My friend said she even heard the local TV news addressing the issue only few days ago: women's purses are being snatched and stolen at an alarming rate.  It seems to escalate days before a major holiday: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween.... 4th of July.

Imagine this scenario:

The girl liked to work out at her local gym.  Reputable venue, safe location, rarely any trouble involving police.  It's her 'leg' day so works the machines and goes back to the locker room.  She opens her locker, checks the phone for messages, puts it back in her purse, closes the locker, puts the padlock back on and makes sure to lock it with a key.  Next, she puts the key into a little pocket in her pants and goes back out to do just a little bit of cardio.

Twenty minutes later she gets back to the locker room and the padlock is gone.  An alarm begins to ring in her head.  She flips open the door, checks the purse.... her phone is gone.  Her wallet is gone. Her bunch of keys that she hung on a hook is gone.... Blood rushed to her head, heart starts pumping faster in realization what just happened.  She runs to the front desk and catching her breath she announces "I was robbed!"

This could happen to anyone.

It has happened to me.  That girl was me.

Was I at fault? Have I done anything to entice the thief to single me out as an easy target? Hardly. I'm not the type that goes to workout with my purse on the treadmill in front of me, or clutching it frantically under my sweaty arm.  I am, however the person who always pays attention that everything is locked and secure before I leave the place.

The truth is, it could have been anyone.  Or anywhere.  It could have been a woman fueling her car having her purse snatched from her.  It could have been someone paying for groceries at the register. Do not ever think it could not happen to you.  Do not ever think you're immune to theft because you keep everything under the lock and key.  They key can be broken.  Mine was.

Such an experience is traumatic, to say the least.  I felt singled out and violated.  I couldn't understand the "why" and the "how" and I had a tornado in my head.  And people will not understand how you feel, unless they have gone through similar experience themselves.  You will get a lot of "I'm so sorrys", and while a minute later they'll go back to discussing the latest news or game, you'll feel left all alone to deal with your emotions.

While it's not easy to deal with theft or any traumatic situation, please remember that it's ok to feel all that.  And that you will go through certain stages as the days go by.  Knowing why you feel and act certain way will help you understand how your body reacts to the shock and will help you deal with it better.  And, in turn, will help you to survive the difficult time with your head above the water.

1.  The Shock

At first you will be in shock whether you realize it or not.  Most likely your brain will feel like it's closed up and you can't think clearly or think at all.  If the police or somebody else asks you simple information, you may realize you don't remember anything.  If that's the case, don't freak out, you did not forget anything.  It will all come back to you.  Your body is simply reacting to the shock.  And it's ok to have a cry and let your body shake or shiver to get the nerves out.  Talking it out to a friend or family member and taking some calming supplements like GABA (quiets the brain) or Holy Basil (quiets the body) will help a lot.

2.  The Stress

Depending of what was stolen, you will most like have to replace it one way or another.  And that will probably involve extra phone calls, missed time at work and spending extra money trying to recover your posessions.  You may have to notify the police and fill out a report, change your house/car keys, lock your bank and credit cards, report fraudulent charges, spent time at DMV getting new Driver's License, or even report possible Identity Theft.  It will be stressful, but in order to protect yourself you will have to go through that stage.  Take it easy and do one thing at a time. Those things simply have to get done.  For a step by step list of what to do and who to contact when your purse gets stolen click HERE.

3.  The Acceptance

No matter how angry you'll be at what happened and at the thief you will eventually have to accept the situation and say to yourself "Ok, this happened and I just have to deal with it".  This will help you handle the situation better and in more mature way.  Tell yourself "This is only temporary, this too shall pass." Say it out loud and believe it.

4.  The Positive

Finally, allow yourself to see the good in the bad.  It may be difficult at first.  Practicing positive attitude of gratitude will help you get out of the situation like a hero, and not like a victim.  In my situation I had to get a new phone, and I was offered an upgraded version with higher memory for the same price as the old one.  True, I had to start paying this phone off (I only just now paid off the stolen one and couldn't wait for my bill to go down next month), but my phone carrier managed to keep my bill the same it was before, and not higher.

So what can we do to make sure this doesn't happen?  How to prevent it?  Here are some ideas that I wish I have done differently, and ideas from other, a lot wiser people than myself.

-Do not carry important documents in your purse or wallet.  Unless you actually need them that day, do leave Social Security, Medical Cards or most Credit Cards at home.  I wish I had done that.

-Do not carry big chunk of cash with you, ever.  And if you do have some cash with you, hide it in your purse's pocket; if the thief goes for your wallet only, you'll still have the cash.

-Be alert of your surroundings and do not be distracted.  Thieves are looking for people with their head phones on, with a lot of shopping bags, or someone distracted with their phone.

-Keep your purse with you at all times.  Do not hang it on the hook in the bathroom. Do not set in down in the shopping cart or at the register.  Be always aware where it is, and hold it close to your body.

-If your purse's strap is long, wear it across your shoulders, not on just one shoulder.

-Do not hang your purse on the back of the chair at a restaurant.  It's so easy for the thief to reach in and grab the content, even if they do not take the purse.  Have it on the table or your lap at all times. Do not put it on the floor either.

-Be watchful where you park your car; avoid shaded, lonely, and secluded spots.  Double make sure all doors are locked and your shopping bags are in the trunk or not visible through the windows.  Do not leave windows open, preferably not even a crack.

-Never fumble with your pockets or purse looking for keys by your car.  Have your keys ready ahead of time.

-Never keep your wallet in your pocket!

-And finally, having learned that the very hard way, never leave your valuables in public places under just a lock because locks can be broken.  Keep the items with you.  At the gym, from now on I'll be having the gym bag next to me at every machine keeping a close watch on it.

I sincerely hope this helps.  Please remember the prevention ideas, and share it with friends.  One can never be too careful.  Thieves look like ordinary people, it's impossible to point them out in a crowd. Please be careful this and any other holiday!

Thus said, I wish you all a very happy and SAFE 4th of July!!!

How To Be Grateful When Life Just Sucks?

We have all been there at one point or another in our lives.  Situations and circumstances get so crazy twisted that sometimes you sit and wonder what else can go wrong? Sometimes it feels like there is no way out of the mess.

Many people tend to stress out and get depressed.  Others try to deal with it by seeking distractions, such as drinking, partying, or turning to media in hopes that the problem miraculously goes away.  Some just go on with their lives pretending the situation never happened while letting it escalate to monstrous size, creating much bigger problem than it was in the beginning.

My tendencies are to get tunnel vision and get depressed.  Tunnel vision means that all I see is the problem, which grows bigger and bigger until I can’t see anything else in life.  The problem grows very fast and the more I look at it the bigger it gets until I see no way out of the situation, I feel doomed, trapped and depressed.

In moments like this it’s so hard to not only see the good in life but also be thankful.

Only recently I have been in such situation.  It was getting progressively bad until it reached rock bottom, and became just impossible to handle.  I lived in the smallest room in the world (literally 5 steps by 5 steps), so small I was tripping over my possessions.  I was renting a room from an older couple that not only lived on the premises but also were mentally challenged, which made living there difficult.  It made me feel like a prisoner in my own cell, I mean, my own room.  I was pretty much stuck there with no options of moving out, mainly because I was unemployed with no proof of income.  Things got so miserable and I started feeling depressed.

So how do you see the good in your life and stay grateful in situations like that?

One thing that I do to help me out is I keep Gratitude Notebook.  I have been writing in it semi-consistently since the end of 2015.  On each page I write down 10 things that I’m grateful for today.  It’s not as easy as it may seem.  Sometimes it's quite hard to come up with a list of 10, and I end up with only four or six.  And sometimes I'd write pretty simple things like “I have food today” or “it’s sunny outside today”.

When you feel down and depressed, coming up with all ten can be quite a brain workout.  But that’s the point.  You force your brain to focus on something else other than your problems.  You force yourself to find the good among the bad.  You work hard on breaking through the dark to see the light.  This is such an important process to get out of depression and begin thinking positive thoughts.

depression help, how to be grateful, gratitude, self help, thankfulness, lifestyle

Another thing I do is I play the ‘worse case scenario’ game in my mind.  I imagine a situation that is worse than mine.  For example, I imagine NOT having a place to live and living out of my car, or in a storage room, or being completely homeless.. This immediately helps me become grateful for a place of my own.  It may be faaaaar from perfect, but I do have a roof over my head and access to a bathroom.  Imagine living out of a car and having to pee at Starbucks or in bushes.  Nightmare! After all, there are so many homeless people to whom this problem is a reality.

Many of those grateful moments from the 'game' make it into my Gratitude Notebook.  Some of the entries may look a little odd, because I’d write things like “I’m grateful that I’m not homeless”, or “have access to a bathroom, was able to take a shower”.  It may sound a bit extreme, but in essence this is what appreciating even the smallest blessings looks like.

And I strongly believe that if we don’t learn to appreciate the smallest things first, then we’ll never be able to appreciate and be grateful for the big things in life.

The Best Hike in San Francisco

It's been almost five years since I moved to California.  I knew it was a beautiful state but at first I didn't know where anything was, especially all the beautiful sights everyone was talking about.  I didn't know where to go to find all the amazing waterfalls, and trails and mountains...

Now I do, but it took a while for me to dig it up.  So today I want to share one of the coolest hikes in the city of San Francisco.

If you live in San Francisco or ever go to visit, this is the hike you should consider.  The Dipsea Steep Ravine Trail we took is in the Mt. Tamalpais State Park and it will take you through some amazing, jungle-like redwood groves, fern covered trails and beautiful waterfalls.  Going through it is like going through amazonian jungle with micro climate, but with cooler weather.

It's quite a workout, too.  You can start it at either in the forest and end at Stinson Beach (there is also an option to keep going and make a loop) or vice versa.

George and I chose to begin our hike at the top of the mountain in the forest, right at the Ranger Station, and headed down the steep hike towards the ocean.  If you think that hiking downhill is all easy-breezy think again.  At the bottom of the canyon the trail will take you up and down, and climbing out of it may leave you sore the day after.

Once we reached the bottom of the canyon, the temperature dropped significantly.  It actually got cold there, but still enjoyable.  While the trail is well maintained, you may feel like you're trekking through some crazy green and wild jungle with huge redwoods and other vine-like trees and growths.

One thing I really enjoyed about it was the fact that the trail runs alongside of the brisk stream, and I got to enjoy some of its awesome waterfalls.  The trail can also turn into a little obstacle course, where you'll have to cross a bridge, duck under a low fallen tree or climb down a wooden ladder.

The final stretch took us out of the forest and into hilly plains where we decided to try a little jog into the sunset.  It felt good, especially with the ocean breeze hitting our faces.  You can see the ocean from there and the sight is spectacular!

The trail will end right by the main road, and crossing it will take you right to the Pacific Ocean Stinson Beach.  Some people chose to begin their hike at the beach and hike their way up the canyon. That is way more strenuous, so I guess you can say we took the easier option; though it didn't feel easy at all!

April Photo Review

Hello Friends,

I always try to see the best in everything and everyone, even though that's not always the case. Looking at my photo review you may see a strong woman who's got her life together and all her ducks in a row. Inside, however, sometimes life feels like it's crumbling.  Has that ever happened to you?

Have you ever been in a situation that when people look at you they see a strong role model, positive, happy and absolutely confident in every step you take, but they've no idea you're absolutely weak and fragile on the inside?

If you have, then I guess we both are living up to 'fake it till you make it'.  Life may be hard, and it often is, but I raise my glass to those that keep on going.  Kudos to those who find beauty despite the ugly that happens around them or to them.  And brownie points to those that continue to inspire and encourage others, and give a part of themselves to those that have less, even though life trips them with nearly every step.

If that's you, you're my kind of person! You're a beautiful person inside and out, and a lot stronger than you think! Don't ever forget that!

So, goodby April, hello May (where is this year going????), and hello another monthly photo review. This is what I had energy for in March:

1. I made the effort to start spring with a lot of healthy fruit water.  Good start helps with good finish. Together with The Bohemian Nation I started a water challenge and a giveaway.  While the challenge received a good response, there hasn't been much interest in the giveaway.  You can read about the challenge in my 8 Glasses A Day Challenge & Giveaway post.

2. This was an amazing day! Here we are doing a little video interview with Brooklyn, an amazing girl that gave up having a birthday party this year and went to help the community instead. You can read all about it and watch the short video in my Meet Brooklyn: Girl With a Beautiful Heart post.

3. Also in April, George and I went hiking in this amazing place in San Francisco.  That's right, there are really cool places to hike if you know where to go.  I've been planning to write about it, and to be honest, the post is half way done and waiting for me to have more time to finish it.  I have lots of incredible photos from that place.  You'll be amazed!

4. At Stinson Beach in San Francisco.  Believe it or not, that's where the hike took us to! Can't wait to write about it.  Locals probably already guessed which hike I'm talking about :)

5. We did have a chance to be part of a happy occasion. My friend Heather got married and both her and her husband flew off to live in Australia.  This is during her wedding, a fun picture of me and my friend Gordana.

6. Notes.  Taking notes, making lists, that's what saves me from getting overwhelmed in this crazy life.  Especially when life won't let you breathe, but piles stuff on your head.  And crossing off things on my 'to do list' makes me feel accomplished.  I like the feeling like I'm getting somewhere in life. Haha, sometimes it's just a feeling, but I enjoy it nonetheless.

7. You won't believe how many amazing murals there are in Sacramento.  I found this one on the side of an art store.  Having studied art I appreciate artistic expressions, especially when the execution is this good.

8.  Yes, I'm back at the gym.  I'm trying to get my guns back, it's hard though when working long hours and feeling exhausted by life, but I'm not giving up.  With God all things are possible!

9.  I won't give much away, other than saying that I discovered this amazing place, a totally wild hike ending with an abandoned mining camp.  It's a long hike, and I haven't got to the camp yet (left too late, didn't want to hike at night and meet bears or mountain lions), but I will.  And I will tell you all about it!

Now let's see what May will bring.  I hope lots of flowers.  I love flowers.
